Hubbard free pdf The extraordinary rise and and tragic fall of South Canterbury Finance's Allan Hubbard. Accountant, investor and financier Allan Hubbard was very much loved by thousands of South Islanders, and when his finance company South Canterbury Finance went into receivership, taking the savings of thousands of people with it, it was a huge blow to the country. The subsequent investigation by the Serious Fraud Office was a further blow to Hubbard's reputation. Well known for his generosity, his frugal lifestyle and his entrepreneurship, Hubbard was something of a folk hero and held in very high esteem. This biography tells his story by way of fascinating anecdotes - from his childhood in the Depression through to his successful businesses such as Helicopters NZ, Scales Corporation and the very sad demise of South Canterbury Finance. South Canterbury had been good to Allan and he gave back to the region on a grand scale, helping hundreds of young people onto farms, saving good farmers from bankruptcy and underwriting large-scale projects to bring water to the drought-prone region. This book tells how he fell from being the wealthiest man in the South Island to having no money for groceries after his assets were placed under statutory management. And asks, how did the 'most trusted man in New Zealand' come under investigation by the Serious Fraud Office? How did the much-praised South Canterbury Finance fall into receivership?

About Virginia Green

Virginia Green is a writer and biographer, who wrote Allan Hubbard: Man Out of Time is the biography of much-loved investor and financier, and founder of South Canterbury Finance, Sir Allan Hubbard. Her previous biography was of Tait Communications founder Sir Angus Tait, Radio Fidelity: The story of Angus Tait and an industry sparked by loyalty. She lives part of the year in Nelson, New Zealand, and part in New Mexico, in the United States. Green started researching the book on Hubbard in 2007, and conducted many interviews with him, his wife, and friends and colleagues. She learned of his growing up in grinding poverty and his wayward youth, before discovering God and getting himself an education. With a reputation for risk-taking and for being a workaholic, Hubbard established a number of highly successful businesses, including Helicopters NZ, the Scales Corporation, and South Canterbury Finance. Over the years, Hubbard became a respected and loved South Island icon, as he gave back to South Canterbury, the region that had made his fortune, philanthropic support and financial backing. Over time, he helped hundreds of young people onto farms, saved good farmers from bankruptcy, and underwrote large-scale projects to bring water to the drought-prone region. However, when SCF suddenly went into receivership, taking the savings of thousands of people with it, Hubbard's reputation took a massive hit. The subsequent Serious Fraud Office investigation further polarised public opinion, with many locals remaining fiercely loyal to and protective of the elderly Hubbard, while others question how a trusted pillar of the community could bring financial ruin to so many. For the final events of the book, Green did not interview Hubbard, in order to retain her objectivity, and in respect for his legal position while his dealings were under investigation. Man Out of Time offers a unique insight to a man who stands to be remembered for the good that money can do, and the attendant risks and ruin.
