Hidden Glimpses free pdf These early- to mid-19th century color illustrations of Guatemalan life shine a light on the cultural history of the Mayan peoples in the 1800s The impetus for this book was the recent discovery in Paris of three pencil sketchbooks and a book of delightful, whimsical, and finely executed watercolors of Guatemala life and costumes in the mid-1800s by the French Consul and talented amateur artist, Leonce Angrand. This was an exciting breakthrough for those interested in the indigenous culture, history, and costumes of Guatemala, but also a mysterious one. "Who was this Frenchman who had painted so exquisitely, and recorded some of the earliest colored illustrations of Guatemala to have been discovered?" While researching the Angrand story, the authors have been led to more original (and many unpublished) illustrations by other artists some dated even as early as 1813. Until now no one had connected all these unseen strands of Guatemalan cultural history and the different Mayan peoples of the 1800s. "Hidden Glimpses" is a fascinating record embellished with drawings, paintings, and photographs, and will be a very welcome addition to the existing extensive list of books on the subject."
