Books Info:

Containing the Nervous System free pdf This unique collection examines the emergence of neuroscience as a discipline in the nineteenth century, previous to when, the subject did not exist in scientific thinking. It developed as a consequence of the endeavours of many who conspired to illuminate the structure of the nervous system, the manner of electrical communication within it, its links to reflexes and to more complex behaviour, as well as to perceptual experience. The eight books gathered here examine the attention directed to the functions rather than the structure of the brain. The set commences with Charles Bell's survey of anatomy [1803] and concludes with 'the father of neurophysiology', Charles Sherrington's classic work on the physiological integration of reflex action [1906]. The fashions in phrenology are presented by Gall [1807] and opposed by Fluorens [1839-43], who introduced a psychological dimension into physiology: Bain [1873] places physiology at the heart of psychology, and integrates associationism with brain function. Charcot [1893] enlists a variety of clinical conditions to support a theory of cortical localization, which was given broad experimental support by Ferrier [1886] in the second edition of his Functions of the Brain [1886].
