About Richard Clammer

A geographer by training, Richard Clammer's professional career was in education where he specialised in pastoral care, became a senior leader in a large secondary school, was active in curriculum development and educational research, and co-wrote several series of successful text books. He has always had a great love for ships and the sea and, as well as undertaking historical research, is a keen practical sailor. In addition to skippering his own boats, he has crewed on a variety of traditional sailing, steam and passenger ships and has, for many years, been actively involved with the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society and is steamers Waverley , Kingswear Castle and Balmoral. He has published six previous carefully-researched and absorbing maritime books, chronicling the history of various British coastal shipping fleets, including two definitive volumes on Cosens
