Books Info:

The Final Prize free pdf Norman Levy's autobiography is a finely told tale of the stress of political activism in legal and illegal organisations, while trying to lead as normal as possible a life of work and family. It tells of arrest, torture, imprisonment and the consequences for him and his family and for so many others. Levy (b 1929) entered the struggle at an early age. A defendant in the Treason trial of 1956, he was later detained under the 90-day detention law before being imprisoned in 1965 for three years in terms of the suppression of communism act. Exiled for 22 years in the UK, where he taught history at Middlesex University, he returned to South Africa in December 1990 to work on the transformation of the new public service. Educated at the University of the Witwatersrand, Brubeck College and the London School of Economics, he has written on the foundations of the South African cheap labour system and has directed several projects on intergovernmental relations and governance in South Africa. "Norman Levy's autobiography," writes Z Pallo Jordan, "combines a narrative of individual experience with South African economic and political history." It's a deeply analytical, reflective and scholarly account which is also distinguished for being an example of the principled choices white activists consciously made against a system they were either born into or could have adopted hands-down as white immigrants. Rather than betray their fundamental principles, many threw themselves body and soul into the freedom struggle for a non-racial democratic order, and paid heavily for it. Levy, along with many others, suffered security police harassment, aside from arrest on treason in 1956, detention without trial in 1960, culminating in imprisonment along with Bram Fischer in 1965. "There was a high price to pay for being principled," Jordan declares. It was a lived experience that gripped Levy and informed the choices that he made.
