About Maxine Beneba Clarke

Maxine Beneba Clarke is a widely published Australian writer of Afro-Caribbean descent and the author of the poetry collections GIL SCOTT HERON IS ON PAROLE (Picaro Press, 2009) and NOTHING HERE NEEDS FIXING (Picaro Press, 2014). As a spoken word performer, her work has been delivered on stages and airways, and in festivals across the country. Maxine's short fiction, essays and poetry have been published in numerous publications including The Saturday Paper, Overland, The Age, Big Issue, Cordite Poetry Review, Harvest, Voiceworks, Going Down Swinging, Unusual Work and Peril. FOREIGN SOIL (2014) was the winner of Lierary Fiction of the Year at the 2015 ABIAS and the Indie Book Awards Debut Fiction of the Year 2015. It was also shorltisted for the Stella Prize 2015. Her memoir THE HATE RACE and her first children's picture book THE PATCHWORK BIKE will be published in 2016.
