Learn about the evolution form the first brigades, to the multi-skilled fire services that operate around the world today. Wayland have partnered with The National Archives to bring you this comprehensive look at the history of one of the most revered professions around: Firefighting. This stand-out title traces firefighting through history beginning with the Greeks and Romans. We look at the Great Fire of London - one of the most memorable fires in early British history and the impact that it had on the understanding of fire and it's destruction of houses and vast areas of the city. Through the ages we look at the early brigades and the man responsible for the creation of the first organised fire service - Chief Officer James Braidwood. We examine the changes in technology that have led to improvements in equipment, appliances and safety. The early 20th century saw women fighting fires for the first time, and trend continued in the war years as firefighting changed once again. Today, the fire service does far more than simply fighting fires. They play a key role in search and rescue operations, road accidents and disaster relief. With amazing photography, readers will gain a sense of how the fire services has changed over time with the creation of an organised firefighting force and the developments both in science and technology and our understanding of Smoke, Flame, and Fire!
