Books Info:

A Danish Teacher's Manual of the Mid-Fifteenth Century free pdf Codex AM 76, 8 in the Arnamagnaean collection, University of Copenhagen, consists of nine gatherings of paper which, judging from an analysis of the watermarks, date from between 1452 and 1467. It is here printed in full in colour facsimile together with a transcription of the entire text. The manuscript includes the only surviving manuscript copy in Old Danish of "The book of Lucidarius", an elementary book of instruction widely distributed throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. This is here preceded and followed by a variety of shorter texts in Latin and danish which include the "Infancy Gospel of pseudo-Matthew (being a life B.V.M. from the marriage of her parents to the flight into Egypt), the "Vision of the Blessed Elizabeth of Schonau concerning the Assumption", a collection of sermons, ten songs (one Danish, two macaronic and seven Latin) with music, six of which constitute the oldest part-songs preserved in a Danish source, three "Masses of St. Nicholas" and much else. To facilitate the understanding of the Lucidarius section in AM 76, 8, Gotfred of Ghemen's printed text from 1510 is included together with the manuscript text. Thus this work by the first established book-printer in Denmark is here reprinted for the first time. The title of the present publication describes the manuscript as "A Danish teacher's manual of the mid-fifteenth century" in the belief that the miscellaneous contents of the manuscript are best accounted for as comprising a collection of material of a kind potentially useful to elementary teaching, perhaps in a school attached to a cathedral. A second volume will contain a running commentary to the manuscript and a collection of essays on various of its aspects.
