She conceals the attack, but it leads to bad choices. In 1974, after failed relationships with Black men, she meets Jean-Philippe Rambert, a gifted French architecture exchange student with an anxiety disorder at the University of Illinois and they embark on a quest to make him a successful architect. Racists assail the marriage for personal gain or to promote political and racial agendas. At the pinnacle of his success, in 1986, Jean-Philippe betrays Joyce after Whites humiliate him. He inadvertently unmasks her past and forces her to come to terms with it.
