Buyers Are Liars free pdf Bessie Carter, an 82 year old widow living in Upcountry Maui, can no longer manage on her own. She decides to sell her house and move into an assisted living home. She lives with her ferocious pit bull terrier, who acts like a lamb only for Bessie. Realtor Laura McDaniel, a 40-something divorcee, spends an afternoon with Bessie, getting acquainted and explaining the process. When Laura returns the next day to tie up a few loose ends, Bessie has no idea who she is or why she is there. Laura realizes that Bessie needs much more than a Realtor's help at this stage in her life. As Laura gets to know her, she understands that Bessie's memory lapses and bizarre behavior are more than "senior moments." With no family left on the island to help her, Laura becomes more and more involved in Bessie's downhill slide into Alzheimer's disease. Bessie is oddly elusive about her only daughter Elisa, who lives in New York, estranged from her mother. Her only son Tony works at a lumber mill in Oregon, but she can't understand why he never answers her letters. Laura soon learns that Tony died ten years ago. Bessie simply doesn't remember. While doing her best to help Bessie, a handsome Frenchman walks into Laura's life, so out of place on Maui, but eager to purchase a beachfront condominium. Much to her chagrin, Laura discovers that nothing about Maurice or his purchase is straightforward. Once again, Madge Walls shows us the fictionalized drama, humor, and suspense of the life she knew on Maui. Walls grew up in Honolulu and raised her children on Maui, the island she loves best and writes about with affection and authenticity.

About Madge Walls

Madge Walls was raised in Honolulu, where her grandparents washed ashore in 1923 from South Africa and New Zealand. She raised her children on Maui, where she was a licensed Realtor and instructor for many years. She got the itch to write fiction about many years ago, but couldn't think of anything to write about. Then one day she picked up a murder mystery in which a Realtor turned out to be the murderer, and a very gruesome murder it was. Madge was insulted. She and her Realtor friends were hardworking people, good parents, and contributors to society in many important ways. Suddenly, she realized she had her subject: real estate. She knew the business, and boy, was it interesting! She also knew about being a haole (Caucasian) girl growing up and raising children in Hawaii amid swirling cross-cultural currents that aren't always pretty. Hawaii may be the 50th State, but life in the Islands is different in many, many ways. And one really has to live it to know it. So she sat down and started to write. The trick, of course, was to take the life she knew on Maui and dramatize it, make the characters larger than life, change the names and places to protect the innocent, add some unexpected twists and turns, some agonizing personal conflict, and voila! A newspaper reviewer in Honolulu said, "Madge Walls' Paying the Price is perfect for your next Honolulu to Vegas flight. And the existence of real-estate fiction is the perfect sign that the end is near - whether of the housing bubble or the universe, only time will tell." Tongue-in-cheek, but he got it. And he was right about the housing bubble! Another reviewer even suggested she'd created a new literary sub-genre - real estate fiction. Make the other people in the story the bad guys and let the Realtor be the hero. Wow, new concept! So the tide is turning. A recent email from a bookstore owner in the wilds of Kapa'au on the Big Island said, "I loved your book, and for the first time in my life I have a sympathetic feeling for Realtors. Bravo!" (Her Bravo, not mine.) Madge currently lives near Portland, Oregon, closer to her children and grandchildren. She's having a mainland adventure and enjoying every minute of it. She is working on her next novel, as well as indexing nonfiction books (All Sky Indexing) and helping others write their memoirs (Memoirs by Madeline).
