The Political Life of Josiah C. Wedgwood free pdf From 1906 until 1943 'Josh' Wedgwood was one of Britain's most outspoken Radical politicians, serving in three wars and fighting in both the Liberal and Labour parties to uphold individual freedom and limit the power of the state. Instead of the collectivism of socialists or social imperialists, Wedgwood advocated a Radical vision of Victorian Individualism as the solution to the problems, both at home and abroad, that Britain faced in the first half of the twentieth century. He upheld the land-taxing ideas of Henry George, he defended individual rights against the state, and he argued for the creation of a new type of empire, based on democratic rather than racial values. Although Wedgwood's ideas came to seem dated in his own lifetime, he pursued them with vigour and passion in a career of over forty years that saw him established as one Britain's best- known politicians. This study of his life throws new light upon some of the defining ideological and policy issues of the most turbulent period of modern British history. Paul Mulvey teaches at the London School of Economics.
