Books Info:

Celti (Penaflor) free pdf It has long been known that Southern Spain has a rich archaeological record for much of antiquity. For the Roman period, however, archaeological research has not yielded such spectacular results. It was clear that key questions about the character of urban settlement in the Roman province of Baetica could only be answered by excavation. Penaflor, the site of ancient Celti, a major settlement, was chosen for its good epigraphic and historical record and excellent uncluttered stratigraphic sequence. The excavations aimed to establish amongst other things the date and cultural context for the first establishment of the site, the regional context of the site and the Romanization of the town during the late Republican period. This book is part of a broader programme of publication for the project. It is intended to provide an overview of the project as a whole but excludes some of the more detailed analyses and appendices which are accessible in a web-page based at the University of Southampton.
