Lethe free pdf Lethe chronicles the life and times of Dr. John de la Howe, a pacifist who came to Charleston, South Carolina, in 1764 after serving as a surgeon in the Seven Years War. He was appointed a judge and practiced medicine in Charleston during the Revolutionary War. He was imprisoned by the British for treating Americans and amerced by the Americans for treating British soldiers, thus branding him a Loyalist. Having enough of war, he accumulated 2,600 acres in what is now McCormick County, South Carolina, and moved his practice, his fourteen slaves, and his best friend and confidant, Rebecca (because his wife refused to go), to his beloved Lethe Plantation. Upon his death in 1797, he bequeathed his estate to The State of South Carolina to be used as a manual training school for poor boys and girls. The John de la Howe School is still in operation serving children to this day. The events in this book are historically accurate with the gaps filled in by the author's imagination. Inside this book you will find it all: love, romance, intrigue, mystery, war, and all the things that make for a good epic tale. This book also tells the story of the fourteen slaves who were kept together as family for thirty-five years.
