Nikolaus Poppe (1897-1991) Briefwechsel Mit Walther Heissig [GER] free pdf English summary: Walther Heissig (1913-2005) and Nikolaus Poppe (1897-1991) were the most important scholars of Mongolia of their time. Heissig came from Vienna- he established Mongolian studies in Germany as an independent discipline and created a western European center for Mongolian studies in Bonn with Central Asian Seminar. Poppe came from a German-Russian family in St. Petersburg, was a professor at the university there and fellow of the academy. During the Second World War he succeeded in migrating to Germany and after the war he taught Mongolian at the University of Washington, Seattle. For over thirty years the two scholars were engaged in a close exchange of letters, which reflect the individual work of teaching and research, but also the international development of Mongolian studies, which at the time suffered especially from partial reduction of scholarly contact and cooperation on account of the descent of the "Iron Curtain." The correspondence shows, how Heissig and Poppe in their interest and work complimented each other. Heissig's competence was more ethnological, bibliographic and literary: he systematically collected edited Mongolian texts, including a comprehensive history of Mongolian literature. He was particularly interested in the Mongolian epic and motifs and developed a considerable and tireless publication output. As an outstanding organizer he founded a special research center for Central Asia and created a Central Asian Symposium on the Epic. In comparison Poppe's field of expertise were closer to his interests in language and linguistics, para-literary, history and folk studies. He published numerous works through Heissig's agency and was the chief colleague of the epic related project, for which he rendered numerous epics in German. Thus is this exchange of letters and important source of academic history, which portrays the two personalities as scholars but also as humans.
