The Chaplain, Vol. 16 free pdf Excerpt from The Chaplain, Vol. 16 For many months now the office of The Chaplain has served as a kind of listening post. The Editors, not being theologians themselves, have questioned those who can speak with authority and have listened with eager interest to the growing volume of replies. In a letter to a score of theologians from coast to coast, we asked: "What are the major areas of thought and discussion in theology today?" The replies were various. But here are the themes mentioned more than once: the "demythologizing controversy" associated with Rudolf Bultmann, the relation of Christianity to the arts, existentialism and the new questioning of its adequacy, the resumption of a dialogue between theologians and philosophers, the meaning of history, the doctrine of man, the doctrine of the church, and the serious dialogue beginning quietly between Roman Catholic and Protestant theologians. The initial article of this issue, by Will Herberg, was sought at the suggestion of Nathan Scott, who said: "Tillich is, of course, the most influential figure on the American theological scene today, but in the years, say, from 1935 to 1950, when many men in the chaplaincy received their theological training, it was Reinhold Niebuhr who was the great magisterial presence in American theology... Now I think an article that really attempted in plain, straightforward language to expose how precipitous is the divide between Niebuhr and Tillich would be tremendously exciting for men in the chaplaincy who've come out of seminary in the last twenty years." It was Scott, also, who said: "One of the most important frontiers of theological reflection today is, I believe, that on which the Christian community is attempting to negotiate a really serious transaction with the important imaginative literature of the modern period." The article here by William Mueller is a result of this suggestion. Robert McAfee Brown felt that this issue should contain an article appraising the significance of Karl Barth on the present scene. "Barth's basic works are rapidly becoming available in English," he said. "Seven volumes of the 'Church Dogmatics' are already in English.
