About Craig A. Mertler

Dr. Craig A. Mertler holds a B.S. in Science Education from Bowling Green State University, an M.A. in Educational Research and Evaluation from The Ohio State University, and a Ph.D. in Educational Measurement and Evaluation from Florida State University. Currently an Associate Professor at Arizona State University and President of Mertler Educational Consulting, Craig began his career as a high school biology teacher. He has been an educator for 30 years, 20 of those in higher education, and 6 as an administrator. Over his career, he has taught courses focused on the application of action research to promote educator empowerment, school improvement, and job-embedded professional development. Craig also teaches research methods, statistical analyses, and educational assessment methods. He has served as the research methodology expert on more than 100 doctoral dissertations and Masters theses. He is the author of 20 books, amongst many other scholarly publications. He has also presented more than 35 research papers at professional meetings around the USA and internationally. He conducts workshops for in-service educational professionals (at all levels) on classroom-based action research, and on the topics of classroom assessment and data-driven decision making. His primary research and consulting interests include classroom-based action research, data-driven educational decision making, and classroom teachers' assessment literacy. In his leisure time, he coaches high school volleyball and enjoys playing golf and traveling with his family. Nancy Fichtman Dana is currently Professor of Education in the School of Teaching and Learning at the University of Florida, Gainesville, and has been studying practitioner inquiry for the last twenty years. During this time, she has developed and taught classes on practitioner research for undergraduate, masters, and doctoral students, coached the practitioner research of numerous educators from various districts across the nation, as well as published nine books and over 50 book chapters and articles in professional journals focused on teacher and principal professional development and practitioner inquiry.
