Sea Legs: A Boat's Story PDF ePub eBook

Books Info:

Sea Legs: A Boat's Story free pdf Sea Legs is a book by Simon Bliss about his experience sailing a wooden boat from the UK back to his home town in Northland, New Zealand in the 1970s. In fact, this book has two narrators, as Simon gives voice to Rivale as she takes us through the momentous achievement of coming into being in post-WWII Holland at the hands of an amateur boat-builder with the dream of sailing the canals and coasts of Europe. Simon then takes over the telling, starting in Whangarei, New Zealand, with the details of his early life leading up to how man and boat first meet. The two start their journey together, setting sail from Queenborough in a series of scarcely planned legs, eventually arriving back in Whangarei. With the narrative skills of the natural born navigator and a quirky honesty that is uniquely his own, the author draws us into his own version of the trials and triumphs on land and sea. Most telling of all is the marked difference between sailing for pleasure or sport and what it takes to traverse the open sea by boat. Like any good mariner's yarn, the truth in it is what makes it all the more fantastic. The book itself is a journey that crosses decades, oceans and the outer limits of man's capacity for going forward on a boat that according to the laws of physics should have sunk more than once and yet whose spirit has kept her afloat to this day. Illustrations within the book are from the original drawings of Elaine Bliss, who came along on the journey for a leg or two, and never left.

About Simon Bliss

Simon Bliss is a New Zealand writer who lives in Northland, New Zealand. Simon learned to sail as a young man in the regattas of New Zealand's northern harbours and coastlines. His early career was as a car painter and panel beater, with a passion for fixing up and racing cars. His most infamous moment was when he converted a VW Beetle into an amphibious car, in which he 'drove' the length of Whangarei Harbour. Simon's first book, Sea Legs - a Boat's Story is an autobiographical account of the time he left his home in Whangarei to pursue a new life on the other side of the world, then spent the next five years working his way back again sharing his journey with the two loves of his life- Rivale, a 30 year old wooden sailing boat, and Elaine, the woman who was to become his wife.
