Books Info:

The Burgh Court of Campbeltown free pdf A calendar of the surviving papers of the Burgh Court of Campbeltown in class B82 of the National Archives of Scotland Until recently, it was believed that the records of the Burgh Court of Campbeltown had been completly lost. However, an investigation of the processes of the Sheriff Court of Argyll, revealed that at least from 1752 to 1774 much had survived, and that the papers for the years 1770 to 1773 probably represent most of the cases which came before the court in these years. The Burgh Courts of Scotland had wide powers to deal with almost all cases which might come before a lower court, both civil and criminal, and although claims for payment of debts play a large part in the court's work in the years for which we have records, the cases provide a picture of a wide range of activities, behaviour and living conditions in a town which was the focal point of an agricultural area and a thriving port with interests in both trade and fishing in an age when the sea provided the easiest means of transporting goods and people from place to place. The summaries in this volume provide access to Class B82 in the National Archives of Scotland.
