About Ian Sherrington

Ian Sherrington was recently appointed Director of the newly formed Jost Institute for Tribotechnology. He holds a BSc(Hons) in Physics and was awarded a PhD for a study of methods for the measurement and characterization of surface topography. Immediately following PhD study, he completed two Post Doctoral appointments, both related to investigating the lubrication of piston-rings in internal combustions engines. After this work he was appointed as a Lecturer at Lancashire Polytechnic. He subsequently became Reader in Tribology and acted as Tribology Research Group Leader at the University of Central Lancashire for just over ten years. His present research interests are strongly biased towards the development of techniques for measuring tribological variables, notably oil film thickness in hydrodynamic contancts. His other interests include research into the performance of solid lubricants, the influence of bio-films on surface topography, the performance of skis, characterization of the performance of friction materials, microtopographic wear and the influence of presence of wear debris in sliding friction. Dr Sherrington has authored or co-authored around 50 published contributions of various types including: journal articles, conference papers, and book contributions on topics in tribology. In addition, he has recently developed a design for a lubricant control system to allow the control of power loss, lubricant loss and wear in hydrodynamic bearings that has resulted in the submission of patent applications. Ian Sherrington serves as a member of the Tribology Group Committee of the IMechE where he has also been Chairman of the Awards Task Force for a number of years. Additionally, he is a member of the Editorial panel of the Journal of Engineering Tribology, Part J of the Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. Professor W Brian Rowe had 12 years' experience in the motor and machine tool industries involved with research into manufacturing processes and machine tool design. He joined Lanchester College in 1967 where he led research in these areas and developed a particular theme of tribological design particularly in the area of hybrid hydrostatic and hydrodynamic bearings. In 1973 he became Head of Mechanical Engineering at Liverpool Polytechnic and then Assistant Rector responsible for academic developments at Liverpool John Moores University. He retired from his administrative post in 1992 and continued as Director of the Advanced Manufacturing Technology Research Laboratory at the University where the particular emphasis is on grinding machine systems and grinding process developments. Dr Wood heads the Surface Engineering and Tribology research group at the University of Southampton which is currently 3 Post-doctoral researchers and 12 PhD students strong and has 15 years' experience of surface and coatings performance research covering wear and corrosion. He is a Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering and Deputy Head of School in the RAE2001 5*A rated School of Engineering Sciences. Previously he was a Tribologist at BP Research developing lubricants and researching erosion-corrosion. Dr Wood is currently working on an ONR (US Navy) project developing novel electrostatic sensors to detect wear in gear, bearing, and other highly stressed lubricated contacts. He was also Principal Investigator on the Valvelink project developing diamond coatings for offshore valves funded by EPSRC/DTI Surface Engineering LINK programme. Other areas of active research include coupling computational fluid dynamics with erosion modelling to predict erosion within valves and pipe systems. He has also studied the high energy erosion performance of CVD boron carbide and diamond coatings and is developing novel repetitive nanoindentation techniques to simulate erosion related failure mechanisms of these coatings. Dr Wood is also Director of the Research Institute for Industry at Southampton and is the Technical Manager of MECS (Mechanical Engineering Consultancy Service) covering erosioncorrosion, surface engineering, tribology, and design. He has attracted over [pound]2.1M of research income and written 80 papers on Surface Engineering and Tribology related topics.
