Bridge (Objekt) free pdf While its ancestry is ancient, in the last two hundred years the bridge has become one of the prime monuments of modernity. Such prestige is partly due to the sculptural qualities of bridges, which are perfect for conspicuous displays of heroic engineering, and also partly due to their facilitation of movement: the bridge became an essential part of the revolution in mobility that was itself integral to modernity - the reliable and efficient circulation of goods, and the regulated and rapid mass movement of the population. Despite the bridge's crucial role in the development of modern societies, and the vast amount of material written about it, accounts that highlight the cultural and communication aspects of the bridge are rare. Peter Bishop addresses all these and many other issues in this extensively illustrated new book. "Bridge" includes many iconic and also lesser-known examples from around the UK, such as Gateshead's Millennium Bridge, and London's Tower and London Bridges- from the USA, such as New York's Brooklyn Bridge and San Francisco's Golden Gate- as well as the new 'mega-spans' such as Hong Kong's Tsing Ma Bridge. Discussing not only the design and construction of these bridges, Peter Bishop examines the cultural and symbolic nature of the structures as well. Drawing on a wide range of sources, including the arts and the media, politics, popular culture, science, and philosophy, the author argues that there has been a shift in the meaning, design, purpose and imagining of bridges in the world today. This timely, eclectic and well-researched book will be of interest to specialists in the social sciences and humanities, as well as those working in engineering, architecture, and environmental studies, and will also appeal to the general reader with a curiosity for the constructed world around them.
