Books Info:

Visualizing the Revolution free pdf In "Visualising the Revolution", Hubertus Kohle and Rolf Reichardt explore the complex, many-faceted visual culture of the French Revolution, which took place in a period characterised by the creation of a new visual language steeped in metaphor, symbol and allegory. The authors demonstrate the network of connections within this innovative use of imagery with examples such as prints, architecture, sculpture and painting, as well as archive documents, correspondence and journal literature of the time. Unlike most accounts of this subject, which tend to look at the genres of prints, sculpture, painting and architecture separately, this book not only offers new interpretations but a new methodological approach, examining the arts as part of a broader movement in visual culture. Kohle and Reichardt offer a new perspective for understanding the mass visual culture of the period and the important role the arts played in the transmission of ideas, as well as in the manipulation of the educated elite and a large illiterate populace. This book makes a significant new contribution to the literature on the French Revolution and the arts, demonstrating the radical shift in content and style in both the high and popular arts during this time.
