Spinoza's "Ethica" from Manuscript to Print PDF ePub eBook

Books Info:

Spinoza's The studies presented in this volume differ in approach and subject matter. Yet they all derive from a common source: an enquiry into the vicissitudes of the Ethica of Benedictus de Spinoza (first published 1677, among the posthumous works), with a view to making a new critical edition of that text. Situated at the intersection of philology and philosophy, the enquiry combines various types of research - in the history of philosophy, as well as in matters literary, philological, bibliographical, palaeographical and historical. Chapter I focuses on the editorial history of Spinoza's "Opera posthuma": the circulation and transmission of Spinoza's manuscripts, the circumstances of his death and the subsequent preparations of his works for posthumous publication by a number of friends. Chapter 2 is the first comprehensive account of a conspicuous feature of Latin books in the early modern period: the practice of providing them with accent-marks. Chapter 3 deals with Spinoza's theory of the passions, as set forth in the "Ethica"- this had an influence on his friend Lodewijk Meyer as early as 1670, when Spinoza was still in the process of writing the book. Chapter 4 analyzes the relationship between the Latin text of part V of the "Ethica" in the "Opera posthuma" and its contemporary Dutch translation, published simultaneously in "De nagelate schriften". Chapter 5 tackles an issue that has occasioned spirited discussions on the relationship between form and content of Spinoza's philosophy: the problematic 'geometrical' layout of the "Ethica".
