Books Info:

Bimblebox - A Nature Refuge under Siege free pdf Bimblebox Nature Refuge is an 8,000 ha property in the Desert Uplands of Queensland which is under the threat of coal mining by the proponent of Waratah Coal/China First.

Maureen Cooper wrote the book, Bimblebox - Nature Refuge under Siege, to try to disprove statements made through the media by the proponent and also by government politicians. Contrary to the view that Bimblebox is nothing but a clapped out cattle property this book shows you that it has a thriving, diverse native flora and fauna population. The endangered Black-throated Finch has been recorded there and it also has 13 bird species of Conservation Significance, 8 vertebrate species of Conservation Significance, 1 threatened and 2 undescribed plant species. It has the best representation of understory flora in the Desert Uplands which has mostly been cleared for grazing.

A Nature Refuge agreement with the Government is supposed to protect that Refuge in perpetuity. Bimblebox had the backing of both State and Federal Governments. However all this is buried under the desire for the royalties that coal mining will bring to the coffers.

Bimblebox is a test case. If it is allowed to be mined then over seventy other Nature Refuges and Reserves in Queensland will also be allowed to be destroyed for mining or the infrastructure that goes with mining- railway lines etc. The Queensland State Government is pushing for 9 more coal mines in the Galilee Basin which is in the Desert Uplands. The coal will be taken by train to the coast at Abbot Point near Bowen and then transported by ship through the World Heritage listed Great Barrier Reef. The expansion of Abbot Point to cope with these extra mines will mean dredging of the port and dumping the dredge spoil on the Great Barrier Reef.

The internationally and nationally important wetlands behind Abbot Point, the Caley Valley Wetlands (Keela) will be destroyed with rail lines going through the wetlands to the port and stockpiles of coal encroaching on the wetlands without a buffer zone.

The poetry and prose by Ian Hoch, part owner, show his dedication and love of this land and are the core of my book. By purchasing this book you will be helping us to continue the fight for this unique land.
