Later, the depression and World War II brought with it periods of drama, sacrifice and tragedy. As a young man, Bill made the decision to emigrate to Australia where he joined the Royal Australian Navy. When he was de-commissioned, his career as a Steam Engine Driver took him to many parts of Australia, from the Woomera Rocket Range in South Australia to where he finally settled in Biloela, Queensland where he worked at the Callide Power Station.
